This piece was inspired by a quote by Henry Wheeler Shaw (1818-1885), an American Humorist. The letter in the mail slot is addressed to Mr. Shaw, who around 1865 lived in a modest Victorian home in Poughkeepsie, New York. During that time to post a letter a 3 cent Washington stamp would have been used. The Victorian door hardware was inspired an old Montgemery Ward & Co. catalogue.
