Barns are a landmark of rural America - fast on their way to disappearing.
I thought through fabric and thread I may be able to preserve a piece of our past.

Wolf Creek Barn

Construction: Machine thread painting, machine quilted

Traveling along winding rural Wolf Creek Pass in Colorado, I found this barn. Its door was just barely attached by rusted hinges; windows had been boarded and covered with old chicken wire. Colorful fireweed grows wild among the abandoned chicken wire.

This piece was inspired by a quote by Henry Wheeler Shaw (1818-1885), an American Humorist. The letter in the mail slot is addressed to Mr. Shaw, who around 1865 lived in a modest Victorian home in Poughkeepsie, New York. During that time to post a letter a 3 cent Washington stamp would have been used. The Victorian door hardware was inspired an old Montgemery Ward & Co. catalogue.
